Pittsburgh Wins

I’m in Pittsburgh through Saturday on a feature at Blush. Nevermind that I said I’d be in Philly. That was a half-truth at best. It turns out my layover was in Philly. I figured it out around 4am as I was loading my luggage to head to the airport. I looked up my itinerary online to make sure everything was running on time. It was. And so was the mysterious second leg of my flight that took me on to Pittsburg. So here I am.

I’m on the constant hunt for that retirement city. Not retirement like AARP and the attached discounts but retirement like I don’t need to live in LA for porn anymore. I have a list of requirements that gets longer when it should be getting shorter but Pittsburgh so far is fitting the bill. Not super expensive. Check. Not super fashion conscious. Check. Actually has 4 seasons. Check. Moms still run across streets holding their kids’ hands. Check. Downtown is cool and the streets are clean. Check. No intense racial divide. Check. And there is still stuff to do. Check.

Pittsburgh wins.

As a bonus their construction workers are all hot. This is promising. Imagine what all the other employed citizens look like. It’s Friday morning so they’re in hiding behind desks and stacks of paperwork but they’re out there. And their drug dealers are even friendly. Usually drug dealers are mean, or at least that’s the impression I get from the movies.

How do I know their drug dealers are friendly? Well one came into the club last night and he’s a big fan. He told me he did construction. He threw hundreds of dollars in ones on the stage. He told me his name was DJ or RJ or JR or something vague and asked if I liked his Gucci shoes. He told me he loves to gamble and just got back from Vegas and showed off his Louis Vuitton sunglasses… that he’d been wearing in the dark club at midnight the whole time. Then he asked if I liked to party and how I liked his Gucci jeans. I told him I sucked at partying. He asked if I knew what he was talking about and tipped me another few hundred. I said yes. And I suck. I’m the lamest partier in the history of partiers. Let it rest. He asked if I liked his Gucci jacket. He said he’d come back tomorrow.

So long story short even the hardened criminals are nice and Pittsburgh is now on my list of potential porn retirement cities. The end.

If I were with you I'd be happy for company, no need to party, however nice that would be. Did I just say `nice`? Jeez, you'd think I could come out with something better than that. I don't know Pittsburgh but, apart from that rather sleazy sounding drug dealer, it seems okay.

It doesn't work that way. If it did, people would be asking schizophrenics how they do it.

I think you'd be happier in a city that skews a little younger. If 4 seasons are a definite requirement, you'd probably love Madison, but the winters can be pretty brutal (not Edmonton brutal, but still.)

I'd like to toss Portland onto the pot. Lots of creative types, active music scene, really clean, friendly people, good coffee without having to be in Seattle, environmentally friendly. Only two seasons (wet or dry) but the rain isn't bad, and like most of the Pacific States high humidity is almost never a problem, (When I was in the Midwest, the humidity was way more unpleasant than the winter blizzards.
It's also a lot like where you were born: you have beautiful rivers, you're an hour or two at most from anything--mountains, waterfalls, beaches, skiing, high desert, orchards and farms, old growth forests.

I'm not sure if you would consider this an asset, but its one of the highest per capita cities in the country for the sheer number of places where you could feature.

What do you think?

I did hear Portland had a lot of strip clubs....

On Saturday morning go to the Strip District (no, not show clubs). It is an old area of Pitt that showcases a lot of different ethnic foods and street vendors. It is fun to go through and enjoy the unique aromas from the cooking food. You also have to try the city's signature sandwich at Primanti Bros. The people in Pitt are friendly.

Have fun!!!

I'm telling you, you need to come to Lexington,KY. Smaller town but not too small. It is a little expensive but not more than Pittsburgh. A few decent strip clubs. AND, plenty of horse farms. Not to mention, ME....which, in itself is a glowing testament to its wonder and attraction. :)

I have been to Pittsburgh and the Blush Club a couple of times. Actually when I was there the club had a differant name. Had some nice looking girls at the club when I was there.

Sort of a unique dressing room for you there also.

Kayden,

Seems like you missed a golden opportunity when you were here in St. Louis. We definitely have all four seasons, affordable, easy to get around in town, centrally located in the US, great restaurants and night life, diverse ethnic food, tons of music, old areas of town, new areas of town, and enough sports to get you interested in one or several of them. It is a great family town but then since I’m raising kids, I tend to see and value those areas much more. And since you are a horse aficionado, we have the A-B Clydesdales right here by me.

I’d have to guess that you may not have had a chance to see much when you were here. And if you stayed at a Drury Inn while here, the one they put you up at was probably not in the best part of town.

I would not want to try to pick a city to live. So many cities could be acceptable to me as I’d find something positive, something I enjoy, to latch on to. When I have moved, Indianapolis and Dallas, it was for work. Both places would be great to live but are both very different. I work from a home office so I’d even enjoy a more rural setting as long as I can have places to run, and find good food, beer and wine. However, I couldn’t make my decision alone as it wouldn’t only impact me. But you can make the decision alone. Seems like you aren’t in too big if a rush to make a decision like that, which is very good.

The transitions that occur in moving create quite an upheaval in your life as you apparently just witnessed yourself. I’ve grown up in a “settled” environment and now prefer that myself after a few years of more transient existence. I don’t have enough time or patience for upheaval – not how I want to spend my energy.

So for more unsolicited advice: stay put for now, keep working, finish school – absolutely finish school!, and where you want to live will become obvious. Why you never know Dorothy, you just end up clicking your heals three times and end up back where you started.

You need a radio show. You're pretty cool.
